Update at M42 – WP2

We are pleased to share the latest progress from Work Package 2, which is dedicated to the development and experimental validation of the HOPE multi-fuel combustion system. Over the last several months, significant advances have been achieved across all major WP2 activities.

🔥 Task 2.1 – Experimental characterization and combustion diagnostics

The team successfully completed the Reactive PIV measurement campaign between February and March 2026, providing an extensive database for the analysis of flame stabilization, mixing processes, and combustion dynamics.

The joint experimental-computational results generated within this activity have already led to strong dissemination outcomes, including multiple papers and posters presented at ASME (The American Society of Mechanical Engineers) Turbo Expo, 41st International Symposium on Combustion (ISOC) and Proceedings of The Combustion Institute (PROCI), Volume 42

⚙️ Task 2.2 – New combustion test rig development

The design of the new combustion test rig is now almost complete. With the design phase approaching its conclusion, the project has entered the next stage, with the manufacturing and certification processes officially underway. The facility will play a key role in validating future generations of multi-fuel combustion technologies under increasingly representative operating conditions.

💨 Task 2.4 – Hydrogen take-off combustion system

Work has started on the modification of the HOPE multi-fuel combustor to enable operation under 100% hydrogen at take-off conditions, one of the key objectives of the project’s low-emission propulsion strategy. As part of this effort, a dedicated 2D optimization campaign is being performed to investigate the influence of swirl number on pressure drop, NOx emissions and Combustor wall temperature.

🚀 With experimental activities completed, new facilities moving into production, and hydrogen-specific developments progressing steadily, WP2 continues to deliver essential building blocks for the next generation of fuel-flexible and low-emission aero-engine technologies.
